Womenet No. 25 (1998.3.16-31)

Dear Friends of Womenet,
Greetings! It has been a full year since Womenent first appeared on the Internet. We are very thankful for your continuous support. The questionnaire we sent out a while ago was one of the concrete efforts we have made to seek your feedback and criticisms that would help us improve. We hope that there will be more substantial commentary on currents events on Womenet in the future. Limited though our resources may be, Womenent will strive for providing more critical information in the coming year.
  1. Topic Issues:Love and Lies
  2. Birds over Queers
  3. Increase in Female Crime Rates

  1. Love and Lies

Huang Yi-Jiao, the spokesman of Taiwan Province Government, resigned from his office after a series of sex scandal broke out. Qiu Chang, a famous lawyer and popular marriage consultant, accused her ex-husband, Qing Tong-Li, as a liar and their marriage was completely based on financial considerations. Romance turned into fierce accusations. She also blamed the famed romance writer, Qung Yao,for spreading illusioned, false consciousness through her novels. Qung Yao responded, however, that, although there are spotted felines in the world, there also exist pure white Persian cats to be found.

***By placing together various women together with Qiu's accusation, the stereotype of women's victimhood is perpetuated further. What sort of social images are generated in such representations of women as being always weak, always victimized? It might have served its strategic purpose to solicit public sympathy in order for women's movement to get on track initially. How much farther can it take when public opinions are endlessly abused and manipulated? How much strength could cheap pity bring to women anyway?

  2. Birds over Queers

"Not Simply a Wedding Banquet," directed and produced by Mickey Chen and Mia Chen, has been invited to various important international film festivals in San Francisco, London, and Berlin, to name just a few. However, when the film's openly gay director, Mickey Chen, went to the support of the Governmental Information Office (Xin Wen Ju), he not only was treated coldly, some officer even sarcastically suggested that he make film on birds that might help promote more positive international image of Taiwan. After such an outrage, Mickey Chen and Mia Chen organized a press conference and a demonstration, with the help from a number of legislators, as well as scholars and gay activists, openly challenging the conservative administration of Xin Wen Ju. This struggle, however, will be an on-going one before any substantial policy changes are effected.

  3. Increase in Female Crime Rates

The recent increase in female crime rates, as pointed out by Professor Huang Fu-Yuna of Central Police Academy, indicated a 100% growth in 15 years. Like other developed country, female crime rates tend to grow more and more rapidly. Some attributes to such crimes are: victims are often lovers, husband, or children; weapons used to commit violent crimes are usually kitchen knifes, rope, etc.
